About Alpacas

Alpacas are a domesticated herd animal, originally from South America, they are ideally suited to the wet and windy weather conditions in Pembrokeshire.

We shear our alpacas once a year and their wool is beautifully soft and hypo-allergic and warmer than sheep wool.

Some interesting facts about our alpacas:

  • Alpacas live in a herd, normally a minimum of three animals

  • Lifespan of an alpaca is 15 to 20 years

  • An adult alpaca can grow to just under a metre in height

  • Alpacas are friendly clever animals that can be taught tricks

  • Alpacas have a gestation period of around 11 months and they have one cria a year

  • They are extremely good guard animals and have been used to protect lambs from foxes
